Solar Eclipses
Occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth.
Total
The Moon completely covers the Sun's disk, revealing the corona. Day briefly turns to twilight along a narrow path on Earth's surface.
Annular
The Moon is too far from Earth to fully cover the Sun, leaving a bright "ring of fire" visible around the Moon's silhouette.
Partial
Only a portion of the Sun's disk is obscured by the Moon. Observers see a "bite" taken out of the Sun.
Hybrid
A rare eclipse that shifts between total and annular along its path, due to the curvature of the Earth's surface.
Lunar Eclipses
Occur when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting Earth's shadow onto the Moon.
Total
The Moon passes entirely into Earth's dark umbral shadow, often turning a deep red or copper colour — known as a "Blood Moon."
Partial
Only part of the Moon enters Earth's umbral shadow. A dark "bite" appears on the lunar surface while the rest remains illuminated.
Penumbral
The Moon passes through Earth's faint outer shadow (penumbra). The dimming is subtle and can be difficult to observe with the naked eye.
